McKean Senior Center: A Legacy of Compassion and Care

The McKean Senior Center operates under the Foundation of the Church of Christ in Thailand. Historically, it was the first medical facility in Thailand to provide treatment and care for leprosy patients based on Western medical practices.

Established in 1908 by Dr. James McKean, the center was funded by contributions from the ruling prince, government officials, merchants, local citizens, and churches abroad. Located on over 300 rai of land known as "Ban Koh Klang," the center began its mission with just six patients in its first year. Over time, patients from across Thailand and neighboring countries sought help, with the number growing to over a thousand.

By 1982, the leprosy situation in Thailand had significantly improved, thanks to government initiatives like the Disease Control Department and the Raj Pracha Samasai Foundation. As a result, McKean transitioned its primary mission to rehabilitation services. It became a Rehabilitation Center and pioneered Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) to support individuals reintegrating into society.

As time passed, many of McKean’s patients aged, and Thailand itself began transitioning into an aging society. Recognizing this shift, McKean's board of directors initiated plans in 2004 to transform the center into a hub for elderly care. In 2009, McKean launched the "Dok Kaew Gardens" project, offering housing for seniors needing minimal assistance (assisted living) and those with dementia (memory care)

Today, McKean Senior Center is registered with the Ministry of Public Health and has evolved from the original McKean Hospital to the McKean Hospital for Elderly Care. It specializes in serving seniors with chronic illnesses, bedridden patients, and those requiring palliative care.

McKean has now become a Multi-Tiered Aged Care Center, providing a comprehensive range of services to meet the diverse needs of seniors, from those who require minimal assistance to those needing intensive care. On October 1, 2017, the center officially adopted the name McKean Senior Center, reflecting its dedication to holistic and compassionate care for the elderly.
